How we ensure that Brazil is directly comparable to Germany

Most international recycling datasets treat formal infrastructure as the only signal. The result is often that developed markets with extensive formal collection appear to recycle more than emerging markets with extensive informal recovery, even when the actual share of material returning to the value chain is comparable or higher in the latter. The Recycling Intelligence Platform corrects for this by including informal-sector activity in the maturity assessment for every market, alongside the formal collection, sorting and reprocessing infrastructure.

The data also takes the perspective of an operating recycler rather than a normal consultancy. What matters in the Platform's ranking is whether the material is targeted for collection, sorted into a high quality stream, reprocessed into a usable secondary stream, and absorbed by end-markets.

This results in the highest available ranking for aluminium cans in both Brazil and Germany, though the path of such a format from being collected to recycled differs tremendously between both markets.
